Dear Citizens and Visitors,
If this is the first time you have visited the web site for the Smithfield Police Department I would like to welcome you and invite you to learn more about our staff, our department, and the services we provide. If you have visited us before and are returning, we would like to welcome you back. October 2006 marks the one year anniversary of our presence on the Internet.
Whether you are visiting for the first time or you are a repeat visitor, we hope you will find the information you need. In an age when each of us depends so much on technology, we are pleased to be able to provide some information you may need concerning our operations and services available to you, in this format. However, no machine will ever be able to take the place of the human touch. If you can’t find the information you need here, please do not hesitate to contact the department at your earliest convenience.
It is our goal and commitment to provide the community with the very best service possible through professional law enforcement. The staff of the Smithfield Police Department continues to be a leader in both Johnston County and in the State by striving to meet community expectations and national standards as it relates to policing. The department is currently working with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies to obtain Recognition status. This process ensures that the department’s operations and procedures are consistent with those practices associated with a professional law enforcement agency.
While no award or honor guarantees any level of performance, they do provide the framework necessary for our people to operate in a manner consistent with community expectations. We strive to provide citizens a safe environment in which to live, play, work and carry out their day to day life activities. But, we can’t do this alone. We need your help in continuing too make Smithfield a place we are all proud to call home.
We set high expectations and standards for ourselves here at the department. You, as citizens of Smithfield, should set the same high standards for your police department. I encourage you to get to know your officers. Work with them to make your neighborhoods safe and the kind of place you are proud to call home.
Robert Kennedy, while US Attorney General, made the following statement. He said, “Every society gets the kind of criminal it deserves. What is equally true is that every community gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on.” As citizens of Smithfield continue to insist on the best law enforcement and we will continue to strive to deliver it to you.
Steven H. Gillikin, Chief of Police
